Water-Repellent (Hydrophobic) Coatings

Unsealed concrete and masonry drink up water, which drives staining, efflorescence, freeze damage and slow deterioration. Goliath Coatings provides concrete sealing and hydrophobic treatments across Auckland that make surfaces water-repellent while letting them breathe — protecting the structure without changing how it looks.

How concrete sealing protects the surface

A penetrating hydrophobic sealer soaks into the concrete or masonry and lines the pores so water beads and runs off instead of soaking in. Because it is impregnating rather than film-forming, the surface still breathes — trapped moisture can escape — and the natural appearance is retained. Less water in means less staining, efflorescence, algae growth and frost or salt damage over time.

Where concrete sealing is worth it

We seal concrete facades, precast panels, block and brickwork, pavers, and exposed structural concrete. It is especially valuable on exposed or coastal Auckland buildings where wind-driven rain and salt accelerate deterioration, and on any porous surface where staining or damp is becoming a problem.

Applied to last

The performance is in the product choice and the application. We assess the substrate and its porosity, choose a sealer rated for the exposure, and apply it at the right coverage so it penetrates properly rather than sitting on the surface. The treatment is invisible when done — the surface simply stops absorbing water.

The products and systems we use

Hydrophobic treatments make masonry and concrete shed water without changing how they look. We apply penetrating silane/siloxane impregnations such as Sika Sikagard-740 W and Sikagard-701 W, which soak in and line the pores so rain beads off while the surface still breathes. Cutting water and chloride ingress this way reduces efflorescence, freeze damage and reinforcement corrosion — protection you can’t see but the structure feels.

Concrete sealing FAQs

Q: Will concrete sealing change how my building looks?

A: No — a penetrating hydrophobic sealer is invisible. It soaks in and repels water without leaving a film or altering the colour.

Q: What does sealing actually prevent?

A: Water absorption, and with it staining, efflorescence, algae, and salt or frost damage — the surface sheds water instead of drinking it in.

Q: Does sealed concrete still breathe?

A: Yes — impregnating sealers let trapped moisture escape, which is why they protect without causing the problems a non-breathable film can.

Q: Will a water repellent change the look of my wall?

A: No — penetrating silane/siloxane treatments like Sikagard-740 W are invisible once cured; they line the pores so water beads off without leaving a film or sheen.
